A White Mountain Attraction for Guitarists

A White Mountain Attraction for Guitarists

During the last year of Franconia College, before its unfortunate demise in 1977, the Northern Lights Music guitar shop was born. My musician boyfriend and later spouse Dan Salomon, graduated from the college, found a nice basement sublet on Main St. in Littleton, NH, and opened a small teaching studio and retail space. The college was near the White Mountain National Forest. It was close to the Appalachian Trail, rocky swimming holes, and dramatic waterfalls, with rose colored leaves in the fall and friendly people in the community. It was a perfect place to raise a family, breathe the fresh air, and enjoy a peaceful existence. Dan’s father was skeptical of the new business venture at the time, asking, “Who are you going to sell guitars to, the trees?” Well, 38 years later Dan’s still selling guitars and not to the trees, but people who like instruments made from trees! The talented luthiers that craft guitars use traditional Mahogany, Indian rosewood, maple, and Brazilian rosewood and recently the store has seen cocobolo, sassafras, walnut and many other beautiful varieties adorning its walls.

Folks who discover this unique Main St. store in its 1833, pre Civil War, “painted lady” building are pretty amazed at what they find in a sleepy little New England town. The back room of the shop includes brands like Collings, Santa Cruz, Taylor, National, and Martin. Bourgeois Guitars was recently added to the superb mix and are built right down the road from us in Lewiston, Me.

Sure, the guitar business was built in the most unlikely of places on the side of Mountains, but Dan and family are determined to share their love of guitars as well as their love of a special place in the world.
